Hi Scribblets,

In case you hadn't heard through the indescribble facebook page or twitter, I've finally got a couple of fabrics available to buy over at Spoonflower a fantastic custom fabric printers!
Here are my swatch samples of my designs I ordered. I'm so pleased with them. They really are good quality prints

They've been available for a couple of weeks and the Greenfinger's design has made it to the "what's hot" section, Yey!

I really can't wait to design more patterns. It's a real buzz to know people love the designs.
I'm going to order some upholstery weight fabric next to collaborate with someone on re-covering some chairs. Exciting! :)

Last night saw the launch of this years 'All I Want for Christmas' Charity Christmas card collection at the White Bear in Bristol in aid of Bristol youth charity Young Bristol.
It was a great night all round. Along side the fantastic and diverse collection of cards ,selected from array of hugely talented UK illustrators and artist, was a lively art auction with originals and prints by contributing artists and galleries and a great atmosphere. I had a lot of fun and all my donated prints were snapped up, which as a fairly unknown entity was a big boost for me personally and most importantly it raised a few quid for Young Bristol.
If you missed out on the launch you can see all the cards and go grab a pack from here There really is a card for everyone in there and you get double the joy in sending them knowing they're going to help a good cause!

After laboriously hand painting a tote last week and posting it up on le facebook, I'm getting a batch silk-screened to make them an affordable affair because the feedback on the design was great and loads of people were asking how to get one and how much etc.
So hopefully in the next couple of weeks you'll be able to get your hands on them in the indescribble shop for under a tenner. Bargain :)

Ok so Halloween is upon us again. Love it!! but so is the mexican festival Dias de los Muertos ( the Day of the Dead) where they celebrate and honour their dead. I like the idea of celebrating what has gone before, those loved and lost in such a vibrant way. Acknowledging death and embracing life.
So I had a cracking drawing session last night and this is what came out :) check out my flickr for more views. Gonna scan it in a little bit so you can see the details.

Bits and Bobs

That's it, it's now obvious that I'm not a regular blog poster. I'm resigning myself to that. However, a beautiful friend from my Uni days, Jessica (also a very talented artist and illustrator you can find her blog here ) popped up last night and requested I post some more. So here's a little update.
So after my first solo show, now way back in July (where does the time go?)I had intended to move up to Leeds with my sister but jobs being what they are, she bounced back home scuppering the plan. Then a job came up with Hallmark in Bradford so I applied for it and psyched myself for moving 4 hrs North by myself and taking on a full time position. Got through to the second round of interviews but alas they hired someone else. Northern plans scuppered again. So now the plan is Bristol, get a place in a studio, carry on freelancing and get bill paying job!

Artistically, moving on from my favourite piece from the Ladies and Gentlecreatures show, 'These Seasons Will Change' I've been working in pencil more and exploring natural/ botanical patterns mixed with graphic intersecting shapes and lines.

I'm really enjoying this style and have another piece that's working in it but can't post it up quite yet because it's being used in an exciting little project.

In other news, the show art work is up on the indescribble bigcartel shop with prints starting at just £5! and for this month I've put the limited edition screen-print of 'These Seasons Will Change' on sale at 50% to £30 + P&P. Keep your eye out for more offers :)

SDCC weekend saw the release of the CTU Assassins series.Such a lovely bunch of people to work with. Just a complete pleasure. They brought together 18 artists from all around globe to create the first custom blind box series by CustomToyUnion.com. Each Blind Box includes:

What's Been Going Town in Scribbletown

Hello my lovelies, wow, well what's been happening?

The Ladies & Gentlecreatures show came and went in a blink of an eye it seems. I'm really pleased I took the time to do the show, really get back in touch with my own work and had the chance to push the direction of my work somewhere a bit different.

It was a crazy week in the run up to the opening. (Note to self: allow like a month after you finish your pieces to sort out your prints. leaving it to the last week to have everything photographed is nuts, even if the printers say they can do it in two and a half hours they mean they will do it in that time at some-point in a week!) but even with the lack of sleep, plate spinning, money spending etc. I had a great time and I met some great people who really helped me physically and mentally get the show together. Special thanks goes to CLC Marketing for sponsoring the show.

I was pleased with the space, the old Georgian doors and panelling in the basement gallery seemed a fitting backdrop for the work.

I have to admit that by the opening evening I was somewhat of a wreck and a bundle of nerves as to how it was going be received. Being centre stage has never been my strong suit and to have that public focus on myself and the work which is an extension of myself was a frightening step but to see people spend time studying and discussing the work amongst themselves felt good. So to all of you who took the time to venture down and check out the work and leave a message in the comments book I left a big thank you.

I'm working on making all work available online for purchase so watch this space. You can currently get the limited edition prints from Iksentrik.co.uk. There are only 10 of each print so grab them while you can because there will be no re-prints!

Typically, I haven't blogged in ages. I always say I'll try and do it regularly the mega Fail!
So for the last few months i've been painting and drawing like crazy o canvas, panel and vinyl building up new pieces for my first solo show that will be the first exhibition in Iksentrik's new gallery space. I'm a mix of nerves and excitement as it approaches. The pieces are mostly done now so it's down to organizing prints and frames and finishing off.
Soooooo. If you're in Bath on July 10th be sure to come join us for the preview show from 5 -7pm, and keeping it Bath theme, there will be an acoustic set from Charlie Bath. If you miss that you can still check it out til the 30th :)

Just shipped these bad guys out to the US last week. The guys over at www.customtoyunion.com asked me to be in the line up of artists taking part in their custom blind box 3" Dunny series.
Kinda crazy to go from an 18" Knuckle Bear to something so small but it was a nice challenge and definitely takes a different skill.
There will 10 of my pieces in the set 7 of these and 3 mystery variants. They're up for release at San Diego Comic Con and will be available through the CTU forum so go have a gander.

Inspiration

I'm finding myself wanting to spend less and less time in front of the computer these days. I'm less inclined to the clean lines of vectors and leaning towards the hand drawn/ handmade aesthetic. I'm finding inspiration in artists who really draw with beautiful fluidity. I just found Chow Martin on Society 6 and his work just makes me want to pick up a pencil and get to it.

I think it's something about the dynamics about the work I'm getting drawn to. Maybe I'm drawn to what I feel I lack. I love this 'Amelie' preliminary sketch by Nimit Malavia.

I think it's the sense of kineticism and the line variation or maybe a combination of stillness and movement, or even imagined movement, as if there were more than one time and space. One in reality and one in imagination.

What Develops Julian Callos

I guess I go through periods of stylistic obsessions like most artists but I'm feeling like the last 9 years I've been trying to consolidate the desire to draw the realistic with fantastic and I'm finally feeling like I'm almost at a point where I'm getting there. Not that I ever want to really find that I've resolved it because I think I'd bore myself.

Ok I swear I do this every year but i'm determined to get myself sorted this year. I did a lot of changing in 2009. Mike and I went our separate ways and I've been trying to get to grips with who I am and where to take Indescribble. So this year I'm planning to redesign the website over at indescribble.co.uk, getting involved in more shows and finding new clients.

So watch this space.

First up will be a custom toy show in early February for the launch Iksentrik's new store in Bath!

Blogging Fail! ... And customs

Hi Hi Tiddleypeeps,

Wow, I'm really quite shocking at this blogging business.
Lots has happened since my last post. This should be Fail Blog! or Fail blog should be just a blank page saying that.
Sadly Team Indescribble is no more. After 7 1/2 years together Mike and I decided to go our separate ways. It was very sad but we're both moving down our paths and are much happier for it. Fear not though, we're both still doodling away! I'm still working under the pseudonym Indescribble and Mike will be back soon with a vengeance under his own name.

So yeah a great few months of change and re-adjustment and much more to come I think.

Meanwhile, I've been working on new things.
I recently got involved with another custom show at Iksentrik in Frome called "What A Plank" This time using skate decks as a platform. I have to say I loved it! I was so anxious about getting back to painting as little work has got beyond my sketchbook lately as I've been busy designing toys and packaging. I had heard that Julie West amongst other amazing artists had been asked to contribute so I got a little critical of my work and went a little crazy trying to come up with a decent design. Once I had a few words with myself and got myself back on track, inspiration hit and I came up with a lil something.
Painting it was a real pleasure. I loved working with the wood grain of the deck and I was really pleased with the result and have since had a really positive response. So maybe Snow boards next.

My sister kindly gave me the heads up on the fact that Carnaby Street purveyors of character based clothing Lazy Oaf, were running a new T- shirt design competition where the winner would have their design printed up and sold as a limited edition in their shop and online. Though there's no financial gain for the winner , I still think it's a good opportunity to get exposure without having to take any financial risks and it would be good to meet the Oaf team and get to experience how they work and develop and market their products.

My sister , a songwriter, sent me the link to this video at the weekend. It's probably the best thing I've seen or heard in a long time. Anyone who is creative and is striving to create something that validates your creative path to both yourself and others will, I think, appreciate this video. It's very insightful. From now on whenever I have a crisis of confidence about my work I'm going to watch this. Enjoy x

My very good friend is moving to Korea on Wednesday. Sad times :( but also exciting times for her. I know she'll really enjoy it even though she'll miss everyone.
I couldn't let her go without making her a little present for her travels.
I found this great little tutorial for a passport cover and after an aborted first effort with some oilcloth (which ended up horribly wrong with me exasperated and swearing at my sewing machine. Neither did I have the right foot or needle apparently.) I think it came out quite nice with a bright blue Chinese silk lining :)
I'd been making butterflies, out of the scraps of felted wool left over from my plush, all week with no real purpose so decided to turn some into some hair slides for her.
Then I thought it still wasn't quite enough so I made a little coin/card purse too. It took me forever, I thought it was only going to take me half an hour but several hours later I was still making it. It's fully lined though :) I really need to practice my sewing skills I think.
Nevertheless, Ami liked them so it was all worth it :) I will miss her dearly but with the wonders of skype and the internet It won't be so bad.

I was recently asked to do a design for a charity project that involves three ladies from Leeds who have decided to walk from Leeds to London in June 2009 in aid of our two chosen charities, Volunteer Africa and Village Aid. I always like to do a bit for charity, gives me the warm and fuzzies.
They seem to really like the design and today a lovely lil' parcel turned up with some great thank you gifts :D Bonus :)

Firstly, yet again, long time- No post. I'm really not at one with the blog yet but i will endeavour to do better.
So for almost a year now I've had a steady stream of work from a local product developer/ manufacturer. It's been a really good experience even through the various frustrations it's brought with developing things for other people rather than yourself.
I've worked on so many different projects form designing toys in plush, paper and plastic, web graphics, brand identity, packaging, children's books- allsorts.
It has made me think about the many times I've looked at things in magazines and shops and thought that a design isn't so hot. I would think how could someone let it get printed? and scrutinise every vector that looks out of place.
I now realise that time and money play a big part. There's been times that I've really wanted to create something perfect but have been so restricted on budget and therefore time that I just can't do it with all the best intentions.
Anyway.... After months and months of sitting in front of the computer drawing these products it's been really nice to see them come to life and see how the factory has interpreted my designs.

Mr Rimmer has made these lovely shiny books of artiness to sell at the Love to Post exhibition @ Go Go Plastic, Birmingham. You can also buy them online from his Big Cartel store. Profits go to NSPCC so not only do you get a book full of lovely pictures you get a warm fuzzy feeling knowing your helping others. Double ace!

A broken leg and a trip home

Ok , so I sexed it up a bit, there's no plaster and it's not my leg.
My poor Mum broke her leg while skiing about 8 weeks ago. She's got 3 massive bolts at the top of her leg hence no plaster :( My wonderful sister Charlie has been looking after her until now but it's still not healed and she had to go back to Looniversity so I've had to leave the other half of team Indescribble at home and come look after her! for a whole month! erk. Thank heavens for t'internet :D

I'm really getting into this crafting lark and the winter has got me messing with wool.
I got an old woolly jumper from the charity shop to make Mick some slippers as his were falling apart and he refused point blank to buy some or let me buy some either. so I stuck it in the was to felt it and it turns out I could make slippers out of the sleeves so i had tons more wool to play with. Here's the result. this cheeky looking thing!

I've just finished bagging our greeting card for the winter holidays!
It's printed with our new Gocco printer which came all the way from Japan. We hand cut the cards and bought some shiny gold envelopes to match the spangly gold ink on the front.
we'll be putting them in our etsy shop very soon so watch this space!

Mick and I decided to do a collaboration piece for our second bit of artwork for the show. Mick likes to work in Black and white, whereas I like to use colour so we thought two canvases would work best with both of us creeping ( or Sneaking) onto each others space.
It created a really interesting almost cyclical graphics worm with a lot of movement around the piece. I Like the the almost Ying-Yang quality between the black and White and the colour. We called it 'I Think It Was Something I Ate' and you can buy it for £100.

Last Monday I travelled to London's Brick Lane to deliver our canvases to Sneaky Raccoon - Sneaky Critters Exhibiton at Bodhi Gallery.
I had a lot of fun helping put the show together with Sneaky herself, Matt Jones (Lunatik), Sichi, Jawa & Phill Corbett.
It was a great show with Mini 4" canvases designed by 30 fantastic Illustrators and artists and some really outstanding additional artwork.

Our mini canvas (which is still available) was called 'Creeping Critter Criminals' and Mick and I collaborated on a twin canvas piece titles 'It Must Have Been Something I Ate'. As always there were a lot of laughs whilst creating the work.
